Chiat/Day Buys Regis-McKenna

This is such a hoot! There's a podcast out there called "This Day in Apple History. Listen to the episode for Feb. 21 and travel back to 1981, when Chiat/Day bought Regis-McKenna. Find out how, even in 1981, "Chiat\Day and Apple cuddle more closely than a mother and a six-month-old breastfeeding baby."

i did the deal...or so I thought.

Chuck did do the deal. I know because I was EVP/CD at McKenna and had worked closely with Chuck in the past.
Apple was being courted by all the NY agencies and we knew it was only a matter of time. I persuaded Regis Mckenna to let me talk to Chuck. The only provision was that Chuckl had to bring up the idea of buying us. I couldn't say we wanted CD to buy us. Near the end of lunch, Chuck said, "Well, Tom, why are we having lunch. You don't usually come visit us just for social reasons." I said, "Chuck, you have to ask me." He looked at me like I was nuts for about 30 seconds. That's all the time it took him to figure it out. "Tom, he said, "it might be time for us to buy you guys out." That was that.

tom has an astonishing memory. it went down exactly as he describes. the venue was jovanello's on battery street(i'm great on remembering shit that happened 25 years ago, it's yesterday i'm having problems with).

Chuck,

Send me an email so that we can catch up.

Thanks,

David
