Ah, the classic ad man is alive and well. A memoir in one pocket, a woman in the other! This is from Marten Tonnis ...
By pure luck I came upon your web site and enjoyed reading about Steve Beaumont and other alumnis. The accompanied group photo was shot by Bo Hylen who's now a very well established photographer in Europe.I've worked with Lee Clow at Chiat/Day as an art director from 1984 till the end of 1987, mostly on Apple, Mitsibishi Audio and Eveready. Then, many years as a freelancer on Nissan, Infiniti and with Creative Director Marty Cooke in N.Y. and Toronto on Reebok, Nissan Canada, Labatt Beer and Amex.
My last long freelance stint was with Bill Hamilton, C.D. at J. Walter Thompson in N.Y..
Presently I work for mostly European ad agencies from my home in Pasadena.
I've just finished my memoirs, written as a novel. which I like to publish in the near future. The biggest part is about my life in advertising which is one of my obsessions. The other one is women.
While freelance at Chiat N.Y., I've bumped into Jay several . He always told me that freelance sucked, trying to convince me to come back on staff. During that time I stayed often at his penthouse which never had toilet paper.
And, when I was on a tv shoot in New York with my writer Steve Rabosky, Jay invited us for dinner at his new home, which was an old fire station. (with his Porsche inside the entrance) But Steve and I declined. Instead we went to the U.S. Open to see Andre Agassi play. Jay was really pissed.
Best regards,
Marten Tonnis

I remember both those apartments/houses. And that car!/ I remember when Porsche delivered the car outside Jay's carriage house it was dead. It would not start up. The Porshe was sitting right in front of the entrance...frozen as if a commercial.
I thought that was one of the funniest things. A faulty product gets delivered to the head of the product company's ad agency
lol
